This means if you’re visiting Canada and want to work, you need to find another way to get your work permit quickly.

• No More In-Country Applications: Visitors in Canada can no longer apply for work permits from within the country. You must look for alternative ways to secure your work permit.
• Explore Other Routes: You need to find other methods to get a work permit while ensuring your visitor status remains valid.
• Canada’s New Policy: This change is part of Canada’s effort to manage the number of temporary residents and keep the immigration system running smoothly.

What This Means for Visitors

Before the change, visitors in Canada could apply for a work permit if they had a job offer, and they could also work while waiting for the permit decision. This rule was supposed to last until February 2025, but it has been ended early to better manage the number of temporary residents.

What Are Your Options Now?

Even though you can’t apply for a work permit from within Canada anymore, there are still ways to apply:

1. Apply from Outside Canada: You can submit a work permit application from outside Canada. For example, if you are in Nigeria, you would need to apply from there.
2. Port of Entry Application: Some visitors might be able to apply for a work permit at a Canadian port of entry, but this only works if you don’t need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Certain work programs, like International Experience Canada or the Post-Graduation Work Permit, can’t be applied for at the port of entry.
